Wear and Tear

My back is giving out, I'm faced with the reality of getting older, my body is not what it once was.

I've got my wits though, and I use my head a lot more than I use my back as I get older.

I am faced with the reality that I will have to give it up within the next few years, or sooner perhaps.

As much as I hate being a Carny, at times I still love it, and it will be a sad day when I have to go.

One day, I'll be one of those people that shows up at the lot to say hi and see how everyone's doing. We'll talk about the old days, me and my buddie's, we'll laugh, then I'll leave and go back to my boring life in the regular world. I'll be sad I can't leave with them.

I've seen this happen to other people, watched them walk off the lot, knowing they really wanted to stay, envying me.

And at some level I knew that my time would come too, I can feel it drawing nearer, it makes me shiver.

Being tied down.

I just discovered your blog and I'm really enjoying reading it. Thank you for taking the time to write and share your perspective. Sorry if you've already talked about this, but what would you see yourself doing after carnie work?

That's a good question, a damn good question....who knows. There's no such thing as a Carny Retirement Home, so I will no doubt be out in the street.

But seriously, I don't have an answer yet.

It seems like there would be something you could do that would make good use of your smarts and experience... something that's not boring but has less wear and tear.

I got a chuckle thinking of what a Carny Retirement Home would be like (a caravan of RVs with mini-size rides? Cute aides who would wheel you down the farirways?).

Wow, that sounds like a great Carny retirement home. Maybe that's what I could do, start a Carny retirement home.

I'm sure you could find something roughly similar where travel is involved but much less physical labor.
Maybe food & beverage director on a cruise line or something like that. You'd also see places you haven't been yet. There are options for someone with your experience. I'm sure you can sell yourself.
